The chances of U.S. Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) being picked as former President Donald Trump’s running mate have reportedly increased.
100 Percent Fed Up reported on this development, citing prediction market platform Polymarket. The platform posted on July 8 that the odds of Vance, who was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2022, being chosen increased by 287 percent.
“His odds have shot up by almost 300 percent,” 100 Percent Fed Up stated. “That puts him in the lead with a 31 percent chance of being selected and ahead of the other presidential candidates.”
Despite the Ohio senator’s “sudden and dramatic rise” based on Polymarket’s president, the outlet reiterated that it all comes down to who the former president meant to pick as his vice president if he wins the 2024 presidential elections. Trump’s potential vice presidential picks have narrowed down to three – Vance, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum.
Meanwhile, Trump compared Vance to a “young Abraham Lincoln” during an appearance on Fox News. His remarks followed a report by the conservative-leaning website The Bulwark about Trump allegedly saying that Vance’s facial hair was distasteful and could affect his chances of being picked.
“No, I’ve never heard that one,” Trump told Fox News‘ Brian Kilmeade. “He looks good. He looks like a young Abraham Lincoln.” (Related: Ohio Senate candidate J.D. Vance calls for “mass civil disobedience” in response to Joe Biden’s tyrannical mandates.)
As of press time, Trump’s vice presidential pick remains a mystery. But during an earlier appearance on “Hannity,” he said he would “probably” name his running mate “a little before” the Republican National Convention (RNC) in Milwaukee. The RNC is scheduled from July 15 to 18.
“It could be even during the convention that we’d do it,” Trump said. This followed his comment that the timing of the announcement could be “a little complicated.”
Vance first rose to prominence in 2016 with the release of his best-selling memoir titled “Hillbilly Elegy.” It touched on his chaotic childhood as the son of a drug-addicted single mother with no stable partner in an economically struggling steel town in southwest Ohio. “Hillbilly Elegy” offered a vivid explanation of the anger and despair of many working-class Americans attracted to Trump.
Following stints in the legislative and judicial branches, Vance then jumped to the private sector, working in venture capital firms. He announced his senatorial run in 2021, bankrolled by $15 million provided by PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel – who happened to be the most prominent tech industry donor to Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign.
He was elected to the Senate in 2022, eventually becoming the loudest opponent of Ukraine aid in the upper chamber of Congress. This put him at odds with the GOP leadership in the U.S. Congress and his colleagues belonging to the party’s powerful strong-defense wing.
Several personalities in the GOP have also praised Vance, including two of his fellow senators. Kansas Sen. Roger Marshall called him “a rising superstar” able to reach out to younger voters and suburban women in a way “maybe that somebody with gray hair wouldn’t quite as effectively.”
North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis, who supports Ukraine, also praised Vance as a bright and personable lawmaker who wouldn’t be divisive within the ideologically factious GOP. “He’s a reasonable guy, he’s got a great sense of humor,” the senator for the Tar Heel State continued.
Ohio GOP Chairman Alex Triantafilou noted that Vance appeals to the working class voters who may previously have been Democrats, but shifted parties to back Trump. He added that Vance’s upbringing helps the senator for the Buckeye State connect to the economic struggles of voters in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin – critical swing states in the Rust Belt.
Even Donald Trump Jr., the former president’s eldest son, also lauded Vance. According to the younger Trump, the senator is “an all-star for the America First movement.”
“There isn’t anyone out there who, I think, would be more loyal to my father and his agenda,” Donald Jr. said in a statement. He praised Vance for “being able to deliver an effective message on the campaign trail and in front of TV cameras.”
